MUSIC

Uncle Sam (left) Grandpa (right)
I can remember growing up around music...music..music. Go with me for a moment back into my childhood.

My grandpa (Manuel Avila) and his twin brother my uncle (Samuel Avila) were born in Cotulla Texas. They were such amazing singers, in fact the whole Avila family were gifted, uncle Tom, my Tia's, all of them in their own way.

We would have family reunions. I'm talking hundreds of family members coming together from Texas, Cali, Ohio...so many more places. When the elders got together, you can BEST BELIEVE there was some Tejano music being played. Our little treat was most of our family and extended family members were very musically blessed! So there was always a concert!! My Grandpa and Uncle usually at the lead vocals, guitar and accordion.

At dusk the park would close...but the music played ON! They would then transfer the celebration to my grandma and grandpas house over on Villa St. The band hooked up into inside the garage, and there my Uncle Fred, Grandpa, Uncle Sam, and so many more would sing and laugh with microphones, and amplifiers, the whole nine. I can remember running around and just having such fun! Nobody I knew did this kind of thing! We were truly unique on the block!!

My Grandpa and Uncle's birthday was this past week on the 15th. I came across a video that was recorded back in the 90's of my grandpa and tio doing a gig for an anniversary party! THEY LOVED IT, JUST LOVED IT! and let me tell you..they looked SO SMOOTH! They were some fly dressed fellas!

The first time I introduced my husband to the whole extended family was at a family reunion!! Yeah he handled it well, and enjoyed it fully! He loved the culture and got to see first hand how our family was so unique. After that reunion, we took the reunion back to Gonzalez Club where my Grandpa and Uncle played and sang a song that my husband still LOVES to this day. Volver Volver.

I wanted to share both a video of grandpa and uncle sam singing a bolero love song and also post the song my husband loves so much.

I'm proud to be apart of the 'Avila familia. I'm proud of my roots, history, and family. You will never be forgotten in our hearts, enjoy the presence of our Lord. I miss your voice and laughter grandpa,
love always, your net net.

God Bless Family
